The Flash Mobile Show

Mobile Slang

Every once in a while, someone will throw a mobile slang term out there.

This is record of some of the words I’ve picked up on, as well as some that I may use myself.

This list is never complete, it’ll just get appended to over time.

Slang

  • Brick - design of a phone or device that resembles that of a brick
  • CandyBar - design which closely resembles that of a typical candy bar
  • “FLUI” - pronounced, “flu - e” … I made it up. It’s a condensed version of “Flash Lite User Interface”.
  • “bits” - the bits that make up a mobile application
  • “Mobisode” - Mobile TV episode, formatted for a handset
  • “SIM popping” … “popping a SIM” - removing the Subscriber Identity Module from one unlocked mobile device to another, different, unlocked device.
  • Walled Garden - approach where mobile conent is controlled by the operator exclusively, and is dependent on what deals they have made with a select group of content providers.
  • “Reference” Platform - an example platform an application will run under
  • Deck - an operators menu that consumers see and browse, buy, and search for content such as mobile games, applications, etc.
  • “Side Loading” - adding content to a device circumventing conventional means such as downloading “off deck”. Transferring content via bluetooth, physical cable are examples.
  • “NAM” = North American Model (first seen using this term … from a post by Alessandro Pace)
  • “Dead Icon” - not sure how coined this term, but basically (in terms of Flash Lite), it means that you click on the icon and nothing useful happens. In the case of Flash Lite, some OEM’s/operator’s are neglecting to put content behind the actual Flash Lite icon. The effect of this is that an end user may click on the Flash Lite icon and not find any content. To some, this may equate the player to being broken. Therefore OEM’s and Operators it would be in the best interest of OEM’s and Operators to think about placing great Flash Lite content behind the actual content as a way to tout their device capabilities!
  • “Vampire” electronics - term referring to devices that still consume a good deal of power even when in their respective (stand-by) mode(s) or continue to draw power when trickle charging.
  • Transcoding - (where operators use solutions to) automatically reformatting web sites so that they display ‘properly’ on handheld and other devices.
  • I’ll add more as I encounter them …
