So the news of the day (in regards to Flash on devices) is that the hacker: comex has managed to get Flash content running on iPad by leveraging the Android Flash runtime and some hacking.

The videos look promising for the hacker and developer communities to gawk at, but it requires a jailbroken iPad and a bit of tinkering to get it to work.

Frash is a port of the Adobe Flash runtime for Android to the iPhone, using a compatibility layer, by comex ( http://twitter.com/comex ).

Frash can currently run most Flash programs natively in the Mobile Safari browser. Frash currently only runs on the iPad, but support for other devices (3GS+ only due to technical restrictions) is planned, as well as support for iOS 4.

A release is planned for when Frash is stable. Developers are welcome to join the effort at http://github.com/comex/frash – fork it and send a pull request with your patches.

Frash uses a multi-process model similar to Chrome on the desktop, so a crash in the Frash/Flash plugin doesn’t take down the browser. You can see this while I’m playing Alien Hominid: the ad above crashed (probably a Frash bug), but Safari stays open just fine, and continues to play other Flash content on the page.

Video and keyboard input are currently not supported. The former will require major reverse engineering of the video decoding frameworks on the iPhone, but the latter should be reasonably easy to implement.

…and if anyone from Adobe reads this: Hosting the libflashplayer.so binary somewhere accessible outside the Android Market would make this a lot easier to distribute .

You can find the source project for Frash here.

Apple’s made it clear that Flash is not currently in its interest for their iOS devices and all their bets are on HTML5 (at least at this time).

However, we’ll just see how the rest of the year pans out when Android becomes a de-facto standard for Flash 10.1, and other Open Screen Project proponents start to “reveal some of their chips”.

D8 was held yesterday and I’d like to respond to a couple things Steve Jobs apparently said in conversation:

6:28 PM Steve: ‘There’s no smartphone shipping with Flash…’

It’s semantics. Select consumer devices (e.g. Google Nexus One) were getting Android 2.2 (aka “FROYO”) updated OTA (over the air) weeks before D8 even started which had Flash 10.1 support in the browser.

Although this is Flash Player 10.1 beta for browser on Android, it still just shows you how out of the loop Steve is on what Adobe and its Open Screen Project partners are doing. I’m pretty sure he would classify the N1 as a SmartPhone, if not, he needs to carry one around for a week.

Not that I blame him, he’s got a lot of competition revving up this year in many his ofspaces, including iPhone and iPad, even any “TV”/digital home like product he has going on. This statement is just a really crafted response that suits his agenda.

Also, to bring the point farther … the Nokia N900 is classified as a smartphone and it’s running Flash 9.4 in the browser and it’s been shipping for about 7 months. OK, it’s not Flash 10.1, but technically what he said was incorrect, as it does support Flash and it is a SmartPhone. I have this device it’s a pretty cool device experience!

Also, “SmartPhone” to him means iPhone class device, not millions of feature phones running Flash Lite.

I could make the argument that devices like the Nokia N97 are smartphones that are running Flash, but I won’t. It’s Flash Lite (even if it is equivalent to Flash Player 8). I do believe he was talking outside of that realm, and just over simplified for the public to buy into his opinion that HTML5 is the “way to go”.

Walt: But you know that there will be…
6:29 PM Steve: ‘Well there “will be” for the last two or three years. But HTML5 is starting to emerge.’

It’s taken Adobe about 2-3 years to bridge the player parity between desktop and devices with Flash 10.1. In that time, the hardware on devices has vastly improved. The landscape has also changed.

In retrospect, I do think Adobe dropped the ball when the original iPhone came out in underestimating it’s importance, but since that time the landscape has also leveled out quite a bit.

For instance, if you take a look at is happening on all the major device platforms there’s a ton of innovation. Apple may have had the catalyst, but everyone is now quickly catching up.

In the first part he’s just saying Flash Lite never met with his approval for his original iPhone, but if you take a look on the web with the capabilities of Flash Player 10.1 running on Android 2.1/2.2, you’ll understand that his motives now are business related and not so much technical.

I pretty sure that if the 3GS couldn’t run 10.1 as well as he liked, the latest device Apple that will likely come out within the next few months will do just fine for consumers needs. What Adobe did (and continues to do) is absolutely a stunning engineering feat as they roll out to more platforms and devices with Flash 10.1 over time. Player parity is closer than it ever has been to desktop on devices.

With Steve Jobs, essentially he’s waiting for consumers to decide whether or not Flash is the way to go and the “horse” he picked is HTML5. Ever been to the track? I imagine you lose a lot more than you win. Usually you pick the horse with the best track record. I’ve got to say though, it probably is more fun betting on the underdog (I’ll leave it to you to decide which is which).

I do think in the D8 talk he did give a tiny bit of room to back peddle and adopt Flash if he had to, but seems to me their agenda is make their “own Flash”, which is based on HTML5 even though it is still evolving and immature.

I also loved how he used the term “emerge”, look it up:

Main Entry: emerge
Pronunciation: \i-ˈmərj\
Function: intransitive verb
Inflected Form(s): emerged; emerg·ing
Etymology: Latin emergere, from e- + mergere to plunge — more at merge
Date: 1563

1 : to become manifest : become known “new problems emerged”

2 : to rise from or as if from an enveloping fluid : come out into view “a diver emerging from the water”

3 : to rise from an obscure or inferior position or condition “someone must emerge as a leader”

4 : to come into being through evolution

Emerging technology can be both painful and fun. However, basically he’s saying to invest into an uncertain future with currently inferior technology (at least in my view from what limited demos I’ve seen).

To me, HTML5 is just a rehash of DHTML and AJAX, but hopefully it’s useful in the future when it matures, and tools become available to take advantage of it, and it actually does become a standardized technology. We’ll see.

I have no problem using the right tool for the right job. We’re already seeing innovation from developers on both fronts with HTML5 and Flash on devices, so we’ll see how it all plays out.
