Best Buy started selling the Insignia Infocast recently. It supports the Chumby platform (if you must know it runs Flash Lite), but the hardware and form factor are slightly different because Insignia manufacturers it. It goes for $169.00 retail at Best Buy, but it’s a hackable Linux board inside (see below). The Insignia Infocast Internet [...]

I noticed that in Japan a Chumby development/hacking book has been published. I recently picked up a copy and started leafing through some of the code. Pretty cool! chumbyで遊ぼう! (単行本) In 2008, I wrote a chapter on Chumby development that was part of the AdvancED: Flash on Devices book. I’ve also built several Flash widgets [...]

The Chumby “One” A while back I posted on twitter (@scottjanousek) about the release of the “Chumby One” from Chumby Industries. I have a long relationship with the Chumby device and platform (i.e. creating content, presentations, etc), so it’s interesting to see this new development. A little known fact is that Chumby was one of [...]

I made this widget (Candle Lite) during lunch today. It’s just a bit of Flash Lite 3.0 animation for effect. I always wanted a “virtual” candle, so I made one. More features soon.

So, if you hadn’t heard, Chumby has begun their initiative to get their content delivery service and widget infrastructure (widgets are essentially Flash Lite 3/Flash 8 SWFs, BTW) onto a slew of consumer electronics, including: chumbys, photo frames, clock radios, internet tablets/devices, even your TV. Here’s a sneak peak of what’s to come: Multiscreen Flash [...]

From biskero, a recent chumby article that is on boston.com: “Overpriced high-tech beanbag is smarter than it looks” “Overpriced high-tech beanbag is smarter than it looks” I have developed for the Chumby platform in some detail (since it runs Flash Lite 3), and can say it’s a fun little (non-portable) device. As a consumer, although [...]

Nikkei Electronics was kind enough to send me a copy of the 12-1 issue of their Japanese Trade magazine that is popular over there. In it there is a 4 page article on Chumby, where it talks about the history and evolution, as well as what is happening in Japan (and the rest of APAC) [...]
