This article describes the new multi-touch APIs available in Adobe Flash Player 10.1 beta and Adobe AIR 2 beta. As more platforms become multi-touch enabled, and as users increasingly expect to be able to interact with devices using touch interactions, the Flash Platform will provide developers with the easiest and most efficient way to deliver ubiquitous touch-enabled experiences.

Here’s a ADC article on the upcoming support for hardware acceleration: Flash Player 10.1 hardware acceleration for video and graphics

“With the release of the Adobe Flash Player 10.1 public prerelease, designers and developers can provide rich media experiences on the web that are accessible to more screens than ever before. The key features include support for new hardware acceleration that improves graphics performance and reduces power consumption on desktop computers and a range of mobile devices supported under the Open Screen Project.

In this article we describe these new hardware acceleration capabilities, which fall into two categories: H.264 video hardware decoding on supported desktop and mobile devices and hardware (GPU) graphics rendering on supported mobile devices. We also provide tips and best practices to produce content that takes advantage of the hardware acceleration in Flash Player 10.1.

With Flash Player 10.1 beta, increasing numbers of handset users can view SWF content on their smartphones and other mobile devices. Since many devices can leverage the new hardware acceleration features, be sure to follow the guidelines provided here to ensure the best performance for your Flash-based content everywhere.”

It’s a known fact that Adobe is working to get GPU rendering support in CS5 when targeting the iPhone in publishing. Other platforms will soon follow.

It’s cool that hardware acceleration is finally making it into a Flash Player. We were asking for GPU acceleration as far back as 2007 with Flash Lite 2.x. It’s taken a while, but finally it’ll be here with Flash Player 10.1 across devices that will be powerful enough to allow it.

Update: It’s important to remember that (at least at initial deploy time), Flash Player 10.1 hardware acceleration will ONLY be available on supported Mobile and Devices and, initially, not supported on Desktop Platforms. It boils down to any (mobile) devices that support Open GL ES 2.0.

However, hardware video acceleration will be much more common across all platforms, as long as it’s supporting H.264.

A lot of Flash (Lite) developers are going to label this as fragmentation.I’ve said 10 million times, you can never eliminate frag completely, it just can be only minimized … and Flash can sometimes help with that.

There is a new Adobe DevNet technical article entitled: “Build a YChat! Instant Messenger application using Flash Lite for mobile devices”.

“More than ever before, people are using handheld devices—such as cell phones and PDAs—to connect to the Internet and communicate electronically with others.

In this article, I have provided step-by-step instructions for building a robust instant messenger application with Flash Lite technology.

The instant messenger client application interacts with the IM Chat server to display and deliver chat content on a mobile device. I have developed the YChat! Instant Messenger client using Flash Lite 2.1. It is a Yahoo messenger chat client, which uses a proxy server developed using a Java Servlet to communicate and interact with the Yahoo IM Server.

This article will highlight how to create a rich user interface and integrate common chat features, such as user authenticated login, custom status settings, retrieval of buddy list information, sending and receiving chat messages and dynamically displaying data on a mobile phone using Flash Lite technology.

It also demonstrates how easy it is to send and receive information from the server and how to retrieve information from the server using XML.

I’ll also describe the process for transferring files from the YChat! client to the server with the help of the KuneriLite Plug-in.”
