Fixing the “Device Central CS4 stopped working” issue
June 11th, 2009 by scottjanousekA few Flash Mobile developers have encountered this problem, so I’m posting about it.
Not sure the exact cause or why it’s sporadically affected developers, but I do know Dale, Darren, and possibly even Peter Elst have recently encountered it.
If you are working with Adobe CS4, and find that Flash CS4 stops launching Device Central CS4 with a nasty error message pictured below that says “Device Central CS4 stopped working”, then you may be afflicted with this issue (not sure if it appears on the Mac, but no doubt it will have a similar message, if so).

“Device Central CS4 stopped working” issue (under Windows Vista, not sure what the result would be under OSX)
Anyways, instead of reinstalling CS4, here’s a potential fix to try (kudos to Darren, who informed me the solution might be to delete the DeviceCache.bin file).
1. Find the DeviceCache.bin file under:
WINDOWS VISTA
\Users\username\AppData\Local\Adobe\Adobe Device Central CS4
WINDOWS XP
\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\ApplicationData\Adobe\Adobe Device Central CS4
MAC
/Users/username/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Device Central CS4
2. Rename the DeviceCache.bin file to DeviceCache.bin.old (or, something else)
3. Reboot Flash CS4 and publish a SWF out into Device Central CS4. Does it now launch without error?
4. If yes, then great, otherwise restore your DeviceCache.bin.old back to DeviceCache.bin and contact Adobe tech support, or … post on forums, blogs, etc.
