Pre-conference Flash on Tap (Beer) Brewing for Boston based Flash Professionals
August 27th, 2008 by Scott JanousekFlash on Tap
According to my Chumby widget, Flash on Tap is currently 40 days left, so I wanted to the word out that for some pre-conference brewing I am putting together prior to October 7-9, 2008 for Flash on Tap (FYI: early bird registration ends September 8th!).
For those not familiar, Flash on Tap can be explained as follows:
“The Flash on Tap conference is blurring the lines between business and pleasure.
Experience the excitement of a beer festival while soaking in presentations by top tier design and technology professionals.
It’s a three-day event, by Flash professionals for Flash professionals.
WHO’S TALKING? We have rounded up a great mixture of talented, Flash and beer-loving speakers including: Chris Allen, Trevor Burton, Chuck Freedman, Chris Georgenes, John Grden, Moses Gunesch, Ralph Hauwert, Philip Kerman, Mario Klingemann, Joey Lott, Sam Agesilas Pastel, Keith Peters, Rob Reinhardt, Craig Swann, Tink, Michelle Yaiser, Andy Zupko, Scott Janousek and more.”
Basically, my idea is to do some:
Pre-Conference Brewing!
Yes, currently, I am in the process if setting a specific date and time for doing some pre-conference brewing prior to October’s scheduled Flash on Tap event here in Boston during October. Looks like this is going to be early to mid next month in September.
For the pre-conference brewing, I figured the easiest thing is to do a “Walk-in-Brewery”. There are 2 that I know of, one is called Deja-brew in Shrewsbury, MA (who I used back in circa 2000, to make my “Irish Stout”).

One of three brews I did in 2000. Irish Stout, Red Ale, and I forget the last one (Pale Ale?). I made 6 cases, but I ended up giving away 3, because it took me 4 months to drink 3 cases of 22 oz bottles of beer … albeit in moderation.
The other place I found is called Barleycorn’s Craft Brew in Natick, MA. Since the later is closest to Boston, I am suggesting this as the establishment for this proposed event.
You can check out their website here for more information such as: beer styles, wine list, photos, and directions.
Logistics
Here are some the known logistics for this event, thus far:
| What you can make: | Beer, Wine, or (if you are really wimpy) Soda. There are over 100 recipes, but I’m sure you could probably do your own if you can supply your own materials. |
| Place: | Barleycorn’s Craft Brew (21 Summer Street Natick, MA 01760) Map |
| Cost: | $95 – $130, depending on beer or wine choosen. This equates to be about 6 cases of beer or 2 cases of wine. |
| Time to allocate: | There are 2 sessions. One for Brewing and one for bottling. They take care of fermentation. So, it’s 2 hours for 2 sessions = about 4 hours total. |
| Date: | TBD (early to mid September … as it takes 2-3 weeks for the fermentation process) |
| Requirements: | Only requirements are that you are of legal age, located in the Boston and surrounding area (aka willing to travel to Natick, MA), and are involved with Adobe Flash or equivalent product (at least at some level). |
Interested?
If you’re interested, leave a comment below (make sure to use your real email address) and I’ll put you on the official group list.
From there an email will go out, and then I’ll make a reservation for the brewery sometime in September for the people who are willing to commit to the time and money needed.
This event is FCFS (first come first serve), meaning whoever commits earliest gets a slot … I imagine there is a max capacity for Barleycorn’s. However, we could potentially schedule two brew sessions, if it becomes a problem.
We are currently playing this event, by hear.
