Two new things of note with Janus recently:

1. Version 2.1.2 is out (and the Symbian version is free).

2. Janus for Symbian Engine has been open sourced!

From the sourceforge project:

“Janus Symbian Engine is a local http server (for Flash Lite) for Smartphones (S60), which allows developers to create engaging Flash Lite applications. It allows you to extend Flash Lite functionalities using simple local http calls (es. loadvariables)!”

You can find out more information over on the Janus site, about the Symbian version, or the other platforms it targets (Windows, OSX, Pocket PC).

Janus is one of few Flash Lite “extenders” out there (Kuneri Lite, and Flyer are two others under Symbian).

Janus 2.1.2 released, Janus Symbian Engine now open source!

The new Janus version is out.

This release focuses more on bug fixing, but fear not, we added as usual some new cool features for the Windows platform and the Pocket Pc one, like the new shiny Socket class for both of them (in case you don’t have access to the as3 built-in one), the ability to load an image using standard AS functions from the clipboard (win), new functions to interact with the taskbar and the display (pocket pc), a new refactored WiFi class (pocket pc) and the Nintendo Wiimote class to interact with the Nintendo Wiimote directly from your Janus applications!

In order to download the upgrade, Premium users just need to go here and enter the mail address they used to buy Janus and the receipt number to get a download link.

Janus Symbian Engine now open source!

Yes, you read it right! Janus Symbian Engine, the custom made extension that will help you improve Flash Lite functionalities, has become an open source project!

You can simply head to the official page here

download it, and you can use it with Janus Symbian to expand the boundaries of Flash Lite!

Of course now Janus Symbian Full and Lite have become just Janus Symbian, and it’s free to use even for commercial projects. You can find Janus Symbian in both the Janus trial package (downloadable from the website) and the registered version (available only to customers as a private download).

We created a new, more powerful license that you can buy if you need to extend Janus yourself.

The license includes the source code (not including the Janus IDE), and it does not allow to resell the source code and to create and sell a product which is similar to Janus.
