LG Voyager (VX10000) uses Flash Lite for some of its user interface
July 25th, 2008 by Scott JanousekRecently, I picked up a Verizon Wireless LG Verizon Voyager (aka, the “LG VX10000″) handset which I found leverages Flash Lite 2.x for pieces of the user interface.
Not a shocker really (LG is using Flash Lite on a few handsets) … Previously, in store, I had guessed it was Flash Lite, just playing with it. What can I say? … I have a unique knack for sniffing out Flash enabled devices!
In exploring the device via BitPim, there are several Flash Lite 2.x SWFS which drive several pieces of the user interface of the device contained in a Flash folder.

Flash on the LG Voyager is being used for tools and wallpaper (if not more)
Two easily identifiable pre-installed Flash Lite applications are under the tools section which include an easy to use Tip Calculator and a slick WorldClock.

Flash Lite 2.x Tip Calculator (in Spanish, I think, no less!)

Flash Lite 2.x World Clock
Also, some of the wallpapers are done using Flash Lite.

Here is one example of the wallpaper from artist “Keith Haring”:

Very rudimentary Flash Lite 2.x wallpaper … but I guess that’s the artists (Haring’s) “style”
Here is the device in action using my elmo so you get an idea of the kind of mobile user experience that is possible with Flash Lite:

Here are some reviews and videos.

Overall, I like the device. I wouldn’t exactly call it an iPhone “killer”, but it offers a lot of great functionality, and compared to what Verizon Wireless was offering two years ago, it’s like night and day in terms of form factor, features, and mobile user experience!
Anyways, I’d just thought I’d post about this one device, as it is one of quite a few that are utilizing Flash Lite “behind the scenes”, so to speak for user interface.
I’m not sure if this specific device has been certified (yet) to run Flash Lite via downloadable content available on the Verizon catalog (haven’t tried yet), but I imagine it might just be a matter of time/resources.
I would be on it if I were Adobe and Verizon, as this a popular device and one where Flash Lite content particularly might shine.
However, right now, it is possible to overwrite some of the existing pre-installed apps (such as the TipCalculator) in order to run one piece of your own Flash Lite content on the device … say for development (or additional testing purposes).

Wow Scott, very in-depth. I had talked about the Voyager recently in a post concerning the ESPN app. Wonder if FL is anywhere inside there or if it’s all Brew native?

Rob, I’ll have to check out that post.
On past (LG) devices the OTA player brought down from the VZW deck and the pre-installed player used for user interface have been separate player instances (on the chocolate for example).
It’s either a technical issue, or the engineers don’t want a newer Flash Lite player brought down OTA from the VZW deck to potentially crap out the device UI (even if Flash Lite is *mostly* backwards compatible … aka FL 3 security, etc).
