Adobe presses on with their 3rd party app Flash Player for iPhone
June 17th, 2008 by Scott JanousekAccording to this article, Adobe is reportedly pressing on with 3rd party (Standalone) Flash Player for iPhone:
… During Adobe’s Q2 earnings call Monday, chief Shantanu Narayen said that Adobe had tackled some of the technical challenges to getting Flash to work on the iPhone:
“We have a version that’s working on the emulation. This is still on the computer and you know, we have to continue to move it from a test environment onto the device and continue to make it work. So we are pleased with the internal progress that we’ve made to date.”
On this note … we haven’t heard much from marketing or technical representatives on the Flash run-time for iPhone, so take that statement to mean that everything is very much still under development.
It would be nice if Adobe and Apple could come to an agreement about complete on-device browser integration for Flash before years end … but this the 3rd part app store player is encouraging news for at least some semblance of Flash on iPhone.

I find it hard to believe that Apple don’t have *something* in mind for Flash in the browser, but I would think that them making their own player now through Open Screen Project is the most likely for a suitable solution. An Adobe-created standalone player that is distributed through AppStore … hmmm … it might technically work but what will it really achieve in terms of “enabling” the iPhone as a device. Stop gap measure at best, but at least work is still being done. Let’s hope that it’s also being done by Apple.

Maybe Adobe will do a lot of legwork with a 3rd party app … and then give source to Apple … Apple in turns integrates into the browser via the OSP project at a later stage?
One thing is clear … Apple is full steam on attracting and utilizing existing hardcore native Mac platform developers … 1st and foremost …
