3 generations of Flash Lite Mobile Guides for FITC.ca
April 21st, 2008 by Scott JanousekRecently, via Mark Doherty’s blog, I had noticed that Thomas Joos had created a mobile guide for the ongoing fitc.ca 2008 conference in Toronto this year (and also for FITC Amsterdam, previously this year).
I thought it was interesting to note the progression of mobile guides that have been created for the FITC conference (Toronto) over the past years, including:
2005 – (Flash Lite 1.1 – Creator: Scott Janousek, Target Device: Nokia 6620 or equivalent S60 device)

2007 – (Flash Lite 2.x – Creator: James Eberhardt, Target Device: Nokia 6680 or equivalent S60 device)

2008 – (Flash Lite 2/3 – Creator: Thomas Joos, Target Device: Nokia N95 or equivalent S60 device)

It is interesting to see the development approaches used, and features offered for each version of the guide over the years (for instance: data loads via loadVariables() in 2005, to AS 2.0 (mvc) architecture in 2007, to now twitter integration in 2008) … all of them leveraging the most current versions of Flash Lite and developed on the latest target devices, at the time.
It would also be interesting to see how much time was spent on each application as the toolset has progressed from Flash 8 to CS3 … although, given the features and differences of the apps, it would be hard to estimate the complete time savings (oh well, let’s just say roughly 40-60% just because of Device Central!).
Actually, I do recall the 1.1 version in 2005 took about a week for the frontend and backend. James’s 2007 rendition probably took a couple weeks. Not sure on Joos’s 2008 version. I’m not sure if he is sharing the .fla.
Since there’s no net connect for session info, looks like he went the static route (which is fine for smaller type conferences) … except for twitter integration … the visuals created for the conference are pretty cool for 2008.
Anyways, if you’re at the conference, you can grab a copy of the FITC 2008 Toronto mobile guide for your Flash Lite 2.x/3 enabled device.

Ahh the humble conference guide – I did one at the end of 2004 for webDU 05. http://blog.daemon.com.au/archives/000291.html
Interesting to look back and see the title of Mike Downey’s presentation from that year (The Macromedia Vision for Lighting Up a Billion Mobile Devices). We’re actually getting close now

The “one billion devices” always reminds me of the Austin Powers line, “one million dollars”:

But on serious note … yes, looks like we might have one billion soon!

hello guys,
I did about a week and a half to develop my mobile conference guide. I went static with my content because of some difficult xml reading problems and with the deadline coming closer and closer…
Scott is right though, for smaller conferences this is fine, but of course it is more efficient to read out an xml file for example.
Thanks for the kind words concerning the visual interface..
grtz Thomas
