Sony Mylo 2

Looks like Bill is geeking out with a new Sony Mylo 2 (which supports a web based implementation of Flash leveraging Flash Lite 3).

He posted about it a while back when it was showcased at CES where he commented:

“The mylo 2 is a WiFi based device that allows users to browse the web with Flash support, check their Facebook accounts, use Skype, take photos and more. It has a 3.5″, 800×480 pixel resolution touch screen and a slide out QWERTY keyboard so viewing content and web pages should be a better experience then smaller screen devices.

The mylo 2 has an enhanced web browser with Flash Lite 3 integrated to allow users to view YouTube videos and other rich, interactive web sites that require Flash support. Since Flash Lite 3 only supports SWF content that’s published as version 8 or lower, web sites that are published as Flash 9 such as Flex applications will not be displayed.”

I haven’t honestly done a ton of research on this specific device and haven’t seen it “in the wilds yet”. There are, however, some youtube videos (you can watch mylo 2 videos while you are on your mylo2? … go figure!).

I’m excited to get one of those. I noticed on the Sony website that they’re going allow developers to develop Flash widgets for it. It’s a great time to be a Flash Lite developer!

    Can you provide a URL?

The Nokia N800 and N810 Internet Tablets are so much slicker and have the Flash 9 player believe it or not.

  4. Scott Janousek Says:

Yes, I am quite aware of the Nokia Tablets and the FP9 based implementation on some of them … these devices cater to different crowds IMHO.

Unfortunately I haven’t seen the link on their website for developers yet… I was hoping you knew. ;-)

So when you said “widgets” you had nothing specific in mind in regards to what they are doing within the browser with FL3?

I was thinking they might have a widget framework in addition to the browser support …

Nope, I don’t have any details, myself.

Besides, if I did know, I probably wouldn’t be able to share. :)

I just found their link to the developer website:

    http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ContentDisplayView?cmsId=content/FlankerBullets/mylo/index_mylo&hideHeaderFooter=false&storeId=10151&catalogId=10551&langId=-1#/chat/

Click on the “Developer Website” button and then login to see what’s happening.

Apparently it’s just come online. There isn’t much documentation yet, but I did ask (in the forums) about Flash Lite support for widgets and here is their response:

“The widget platform does currently support the use of Flash with some restrictions. The mylo™ COM-2 also has native support for launching .swf files from Internal Memory or a Memory Stick and will open them full screen.”

Hopefully they’ll release more documentation that explains what limitations there might be.
