Where’s Waldo?
December 10th, 2007 by Scott JanousekI was at FlexCamp Boston last Friday … and it occured to me (yet again) that I should be posting about this … as it has been regular occurence at conferences, and needs to be addressed.
These two “typical” (U.S.) event photos reminded me a bit of the game: “Where’s Waldo?”.
Note: In photo #1, it’s quite challenging to find Waldo … where as in photo #2 it’s not so challenging (unfortunately):
Photo #1
Event: FlexCamp Boston
Date: Dec 07, 2007
Location: Bentley College

People falling off the upper balcony?
Photo #2
Event: Mobile and Devices Boot Camp
Date: 2007
Location: Adobe MAX 2007 (Chicago)

Tumble Weeds … not included? … P.S. People missed out on some great material.
Now … is this due to a problem with mobile in general? Perhaps. Is it regional? Probably (both these are US events)! … I imagine it’d be a completely different story in EMEA and APAC!
But, in all seriousness … I guess my main thought here in this post, is that if there was Flex for Mobile devices … and even if it was just 1% total addressable market in terms of devices … would it make sense to attract the large # of Flex developers to mobile … right now?
Granted, we (the global Flash Mobile community at large) are doing a lot of cool things with Flash Lite 1.x, 2.x, and now 3.x … whether it be projects, services, products, and companies!
I just always find myself asking the if question … that is: If there were Flex for mobile (or at least suitable platforms!); and even if it did have limitations such as total addressable devices … as well as technical constraints (memory, processor). Would this change photo #2 (above)?
My intention of this post is not to make trouble … it’s merely to bring up a point about how Adobe can best bring the Flex development community into the fold of mobile … in the most efficient, but yet timely and practical way possible.
Is it too early for Flex on mobile? Perhaps … but it surely is the zenith as far as desktop Flex popularity is concerned.
For now, we have Flash Lite 2.x, and 3.x which we can do some really cool things with, anyways.
Thoughts?

Ciao Scott,
good points!
Maybe the Web Runtime and Flash Lite could help? In any case mobile is much more complicated environment compared to the web.
