Jarpa – Java Packaging for Flash Lite Content
November 20th, 2007 by Scott JanousekJarpa is a recent open source project for Java Packaging of Flash Lite Content, created by Felipe Andrade (implementor) and Alessandro Pace (innovator).
Alessandro was talking about this early this year, and I remember it being a good practical idea for someone to tackle, given the fact that unlike Series 60 (with SWF2Go and now, recently: Janus) … with Series 40, there was no really way to package Flash Lite content.
If you did not know, Series 40 runs a proprietary Nokia OS, and not Symbian, thus no .SIS is possible as commonly found on Series 60 devices.
So with Jarpa and installation of Flash Lite via a JAR file it’s possible to install Flash Lite on S40 … here’s what’s said over at the project blog:
“Recently, a new generation of mobile phones with support for Java ME and Flash Lite has been taking widespread acceptance by the market opening the door for hybrid applications. Looking for this business potential Jarpa was created allowing Flash Lite Developers deliver their content as Java ME applications.”
With Jarpa, it now appears at least one method (Flash Lite via JAR installation) is now a possible packaging method with Series 40 devices (and well additional install method for S60, and other platforms).
This could potentially be integrated into content distribution down the road, so stay tuned as it evolves.
You can join the project if you are interested in contributing to this open source initiative.
Felipe and Alessandro are also looking for people to help improve on this. You can read further about the endeavor of Felipe’s blog.
