Sony Ericsson guidelines for Flash Lite 2.0

Mark posted about the Sony Ericsson guidelines for Flash Lite 2.0.

Without being incorrectly labeled as “anti”-Sony Ericsson (everyone knows I’m a nice guy, right? :) ), I’ll just say I’d expect there to be a lot more info in this kind of document … perhaps I downloaded the wrong document?

I don’t think that’s the case though … anyways, I’m just making an simple observation of this specific item’s brevity.

Anyways, SE does have some excellent resources which are in depth … most of which the community contributed to. You should check’em out.

Um… out of a 10 page document 5 pages are devoted to the cover, table of contents, legal notices, document history, etc. Of the remaining 5 pages we have 1/2 page overview, 1 (and a tiny bit) page(s) of ‘specs’, 6 lines devoted to links/reference, and a 1 page appendix on general design considerations.

It’s also interesting to note where SE are somewhat fragmenting Flash Lite in regards to device video playback, streaming sound (MP3, AAC, and so on)
and host decoded gif and png images with transparency – which are listed as compliancy exceptions.

There also seems to be some confusion around ‘softkeys’:

“Navigation:…On Sony Ericsson phones, some keys are assigned for a specific use, for example, “Backâ€? and “Selectâ€?. This may need to be considered when designing Flash Lite applications, to avoid usability problems.”

“Softkeys: Newer Sony Ericsson phones support up to three softkeys, however Flash Lite is only able to control two of them as the third softkey is mapped to the centre navigation key, the Key.ENTER event. Softkeys are only mappable when a flash file is played in the interactive mode in the browser, not within a web page.”

Perhaps, someone working with SE devices may be able to clarify the above?

This is quite disappointing as SE has same fantastic Java resources… :(

We’re actively working with SEMC on FL developer resources and expect to have additional information soon. FYI… I’m testing FL content on 3 SEMC devices and I have to say they’re awesome for what they offer. Expect a some posts on my site about this in the next week.
