Sony Ericsson S500i with Flash Lite User Interface
October 27th, 2007 by Scott JanousekMark Doherty had a post about some of the Flash Lite User Interface found on the Sony Ericsson S500i.
The device reminds me a little bit of the LG Chocolate we have over here in the US with Verizon Wireless (which also has some Flash Lite User Interface as well as Flash Lite for BREW support) … but the experience seems to me, a bit more innovative.
Check out the videos on youtube.
P.S. The “Cell Light” is highly reminiscent of the sleep indicator light on MacBooks (without the color) …

The phone is available here in the U.S. as well, though not directly through most wireless providers. Then again, I didn’t find any of the decent phones being provided directly through them anyway. I just got off of Ebay. The interface is really cool, the funny thing was one of the wallpapers actually had the flash logo as its icon instead of a regular thumbnail. We are using it with AT&T / Cingular, though it will work with any GSM provider. It did come with a 220/120 charger so it should work overseas just as well without getting a separate charger. For a Flash Lite interface, I really wouldn’t have known it – in fact I’m guessing the average Sony Ericsson user won’t know. The interface of the phone is identical to the one on my Sony Ericsson 790a, and the two games that come pre-installed are actually Java apps. That they got the interface identical to their standard interface is actually pretty cool. I’m really excited at Mark’s report that Sony is making this phone open to developers….gives me some incentive to build mobile apps in Flash (b/c in the U.S., getting a flash lite app published through Verizon, for example, is a MAJOR headache).
The other thing to be aware of, I had assumed that the phone would natively sync well with my Mac just as the 790a does. It isn’t supported by iSync, but there is a plugin I downloaded for around U.S. $6 from feisar.com that not only updates iSync and Address Book to work with the phone, but apparently you could dial numbers directly from Address Book. That last feature, though, isn’t supported in Leopard since apparently Apple disabled that ability in Address Book in Leopard.

[...] like a really decent phone, had no idea it’s OS was Flash Lite until I just happened to see Scott Janosek’s blog post on MXNA, about Mark Doherty’s post on the phone. As far as I can tell, the UI is identical [...]

Fuad, yes I know it’s available … I just don’t see a lot of SE around, especially through providers.
I’m not entirely sure if the whole interface is in Flash Lite, or just parts.
From Mark, it sounded like much if not all of it …
Perhaps Adobe will comment on that if they see this post.
