scottjanousek.com RSS Chumby widget
August 26th, 2007 by Scott JanousekThere is now a chumby widget for my desktop blog.
I’ll make improvements and add more features over time (one of the great features of the chumby … transparent updates to your content … over-the-air!).

Scott–
I’ve checked the Chumby.com site and can’t find your widget listed. If you have posted it, please point me in the right direction. If you haven’t, can you please add it?
I’m one of the lucky “First 50″ and I’d love to add your widget to my InfoDump channel.
Thanks & Regards,
KC

Remember, all widgets must go through a manual approval process right now before the public flag is enabled.
Look for it under “news” soon …

Ah…not having submitted I didn’t realize that. Thanks…I’ll keep watching!
By the way, now that I think about it, there’s a way you might be able pass the widget along without approval. (Just as a point of information.)
I don’t believe that “private” widgets need to go through an approval process and they can be sent to “chums”. So, if you uploaded a private widget, you could send it to anyone who consented to be your chum.

Kevin, you might be right about send via chum. Last time I checked it wasn’t really active, but that may not be true now.

Hi guys,
The widget is now public and available in the News category.
Kevin’s right — you can share a private widget with a chum. We’re still working on developing the right system here, but you can find out more about how it currently works here: http://www.chumby.com/chums

Thanks Mike.
Kevin, if you have a chance let me know how it performs on the newer beta. I wanted to add a lot of fancy fades and effects but I was limited to the player 2 so I keep it simple to begin with …
Looking forward to a more efficient approval process … perhaps it might involve a “social aspect” youtube-like content approval process?

Cool! I’ll go add it now and let you know how it works after I get home tonight.

Hi Scott–
The new widget was running on my Chumby when I got home. (I’d added it to a channel from my desktop at work.)
I like the title screen. Most widgets jump straight to content, but the brief title was sort of a nice break.
The slide-in transition seems to happen in about two or three frames…sort of “blank”, “half”, and “there”. Don’t know if that was your intent.
The controls are obvious and easy to use.
All-in-all, good job!

Kevin, thanks for testing on Ironforge. I modified some keyframes. I’m hoping it runs a bit more fluid on that model.
Without a prod device … and no ADC profile … it’s a slight “develop in the dark situation” in terms of on-device content tweaking … which is why I said it was a work in progress.

And a good WIP it is. It appears a bit more fluid.
It’s a terrific example of user-created content and that is what will make the Chumby the “must have” device of the next few years. (Oh, and streaming mp3 playback.)
