Hayden Porter has a new blog and a recent post attempting to list Flash Lite devices currently circulating in the North American market (US & and Canada) through various operators.

Quite useful! But the information quickly becomes dated. It would be incredibly useful to have this info, instead, I think, inside of Device Central … being updated periodically and automatically so that statistics become part of the profiles themselves.

Not likely to happen anytime soon, I know (this is not information Adobe should be focusing on directly, anyways), but I like to think outside of the box …

It would be interesting feature if Adobe Device Central could allow for 3rd party type plug-ins down the road, however, that might enable this type of functionality.

Just a thought.

Another option might be a community solution.

Perhaps set up a blog system just for this purpose, with new device/carrier announcements (Alessandro does this a bit already) and a listing by region maintained by a group of volunteers around the globe.

(Of course people often volunteer for things like this, then drop them quickly afterward so it would all depend upon finding truly committed people.)

Again this would depend upon developer interest.

Is anyone, besides me, interested in flash phone penetration in a particular market? I have certain projects that would only be relevant to audiences within certain parts of the US. This may not be the same needs as other people who are making games, though I could see some value for those making branded content that relates to country specific holidays, or athletic teams.

I think this kind of information is essential to anyone seriously hoping to develop successful fl content commerically. I know i would find it invaluable to know the exact (or even rough) figures for fl penetration in the UK Market.
I think the main problem with this is that although you can always try and reference handsets sold etc, this does not always give you a realistic view of the number of these devices that are still being used…. (some of the older s40 models for instance…)
Also, it seems in the uk, flashlite does not seem to be a selling point of the handsets if you walk into a mobile retail store. maybe a bit more consumer awareness would help….

Matt, Good point on device usage over time. Another point, millions of devices shipped doesn’t tell one what they are actually using them for … sadly, could be for only voice! Depends on region/culture/etc etc. :)

I don’t think Adobe will be adding this specific feature of stats … but perhaps some DM info will appear that is not so sensitive.

Since obviously the more sensitive info is controlled by OEM’s and I don’t think they would like have any of their numbers inside a product … which is why I proposed 3rd party integration (somehow).

Hayden, nice thought on the community route. Perhaps a wiki might work best? A blog might be much less maintainable (but I can picture it).

I guess the simple route is probably best in regards to what I discussed in this post. I use my blog to post outlandish ideas sometimes, I’m allowed. The goal isn’t to necessarily say, this is what should be done, but rather to spur other people’s thoughts and imagination … like we have seen in this post.
