Nintendo DS Lite … how do you improve on near perfection?
June 20th, 2007 by Scott JanousekApparently, there’s some speculative talk about a second version of the Nintendo DS Lite over at dsfanboy and engadget.
My question: How do you improve on near perfection?
I’m sure Nintendo has some good ideas to answer this question (if the rumors are in fact true).
UPDATE: There is a reason why I said “near” perfection. Sure you could add x,y,z and features, but it would either a.) blow the price point or b.) change it sufficiently till it’s no longer a portable gaming device … but, rather a PMP or other hybrid device (all of which it can do now with add-ons). The purpose of the post is to say that Nintendo hit the mark on providing a cheap, but elegant portable game device … I wonder what they might do to improve on this specific device design.

Built-in camera, 802.11n, WAP & WAP2, larger screens, longer battery life, dual headphone jacks…

Dave, that’s why I said “near perfection … you are a stickler for hardware, aren’t you!
I agree with WPA and WPA2 (frustrating!).
At least, 802.11g would be nice too.
More battery life is always nice … don’t know about you but I’ve gotten to the point where I have to label all my power supplies (even though DS is pretty unique design) and always doing a power adapter “hunt”.
Why do you want a larger screen, it’ll break the footprint … maybe you mean better quality displays or perhaps you mean occupy more of the current footprint?
A camera would be nice, but I think they don’t have it due to security concerns with younger users … just a guess.

I had a bad experience of using a wrong power adapter with a router and fried it. It’s from the same company for a different model; the only difference is the voltage. So I’ve been labeling them too. There are just too many of them for us gadget geeks…
Re: Larger screen - I can see slightly larger screens without changing the form factor.
Oh, while I’m at it, how about multi-touch, SIM and memory slot too?
And to prove that I’m not (just) a stickler for hardware, how about built-in VoIP software and browser in firmware?

Nice ideas, if none “break the bank” on the price point … I’ve seen DS Lites for as cheap as $110.
Also, for proposed features we forgot an important one:
Flash Lite 3.x player support with integrated wifi accessible ecosystem for casual (game) content creation & distribution!
I guess Nintendo should contact us to beta test their next device. Right?

Streaming video on a DS Lite, that would be a hot selling feature!
