OLPC Game Jam @ Olin College on June 8-10 ‘07
May 26th, 2007 by Scott JanousekApparently, in a couple weeks, just a mile or two from me is the OLPC “Game Jam” event being conducted at the Olin College of Engineering (think Mini MIT, folks). It’s from June 8 to the 10th.
What is it all about? Here is their event description:
“The OLPC Game Jam is a game design and programming event designed to encourage (simultaneously) experimentation and innovation in the game industry and kick off development of open-source games for the OLPC platform (the XO). A group of game developers will get together over a three-day period to make as many innovative games as possible for the laptop, which is being distributed to children in developing countries around the world. Our goal is not just some great games and experimentation for the XO Laptop but also to bring the unique constraints and output of this project to next years GDC Experimental Gameplay Workshop. Code will be released on SourceForge under the GNU General Public License so everyone can freely experiment with the source and games.”
Sounds very cool.
…
Unfortunately, I’ve got some stuff going on right around the same timeframe, so I’m not sure how much I can be involved at this late stage (I just found out about it today) …
I’d thought I’d post on my blog since I’m bound to reach at least one other person and/or team/company that has the time to submit and participate in this event!
Anyways, sounds like fun … and I definiately think it would make a whole lot of sense to have a group or individual represent the Flash community in terms of game development!
Want to know more? Everything is spelled out very nicely at the OLPC Game Jam site (application, submission rules, etc).
Good luck (if you are participating).

This event got me thinking … I wonder if we’ll see the equivalent of the OLPC in the mobile world, with OMPC (One mobile per child) in a few years time?! There are Linux based devices already in the marketplace … and even open source GSM phones like the TUX … hmmm.

You should come to the Jam tomorrow night, to join in the brainstorming, see what it’s about, and decide if you want to come all weekend… or even if you know you can’t. –SJ
