Share your Flash Lite preso slides
May 24th, 2007 by Scott JanousekI’ve initiated a new community effort: “Sharing your Flash Lite presentations” on slideshare.net. The URL for this is:
http://www.slideshare.net/group/flash-lite-presentations
…
The goal of this endeavor is to have one central location to host community Flash Lite presentation slides (and other Adobe Mobile technologies).
Here’s how I envision the process working … you give a preso to a group (conference, user group, or similar meeting), then afterwards you upload the deck portion of the preso so the rest of the community (that was unable to attend), has access to it in a more central location. Of course, you miss out on the speaker, and the session experience, but slides are better than nothing … and when recording isn’t possible this is the next best thing.
In my view, slideshare.net is a perfect service that allows you to freely upload, host, and allow access to your slide decks online in one spot (as a 2nd-ary location to a blog, etc).
…
Anyways … unfortunately, I tried to send out invites last night to all the usergroups, but something went awry with the number of email invites (or format?) from the system … since no one from any of the user groups apparently received the message. I am resending manually now … so, looks like the slidedeck.net beta is really an alpha, and not the other way around (but that’s not to say it isn’t stable, I just may have found a bug) … then again, perhaps it was user error due to it being 3 AM. I’m not sure. What I do know is that the service is very cool and for sharing slides it makes a whole lot of sense to me.
What’s more … until sliderocket.com comes into public BETA, I think this is a good place to post community Flash Lite slides. Now that I think of it, it’s an excellent place to post ANY related Flash Platform or Adobe product related presentations.
I guess I picture is a central locations where people can go to find preso’s instead of having to trudge through blogs, drill down in google, and otherwise induce a labor intensive search to find out what is being talked about in the community!
…
As with any new community effort, there are some basic rules:
…
1. If you’re sharing … obviously these will be slides you’re willing to share with everyone publicly … your intentions can be to share your thoughts, promote your knowledge or expertise, etc. Just let it be a just cause.
2. Another rule I have for this community group is that you post slide decks you have delivered to an audience either in an online, or physical setting at least once. This is not a place to post inappropriate material, and I will be “policing” this site to some degree.
3. Please do not post other people’s slide decks you find online, unless you have direct permission. That is a definite no-no. I will frown heavily upon that, and so will the author(s)! Needless to say, those posting may want to disable the “download” feature so that slides can be only viewed (making it harder to snag them directly).
…
With all that being said … if you think this is a good idea, please spread the word through the blog-o-sphere as well as on any user group lists I may have forgotten.
…
What if my preso is not in English? No problem! It may just be me, but I love to see the Flash Platform talked about in different languages. It promotes more worldly ideas, technologies, etc even if one can’t understand everything.
For example, I was searching on Chaku a few years back and actually found the syntax stuck in a preso. This is something that wasn’t easily found -anywhere- at that particular time. Yet because that developer from Japan had posted slides, I found the info.
In terms of slideshare.net … what’s great is it slideshare.net has an option for different languages. I haven’t tried it personally yet, but it looks encouraging. I urge folks from around the globe to upload their decks, even if their slides are not in English!
…
I’ve got a few of my older preso’s up right right now … looking to see a few more trickle in from the community.
…
Also, I may change either the name or other details about the community group. Still exploring all the functionality.
If you have ideas about a good name or logo for the group, please let me know.
UPDATE: One my Flash Lite preso’s just got featured on the front page on 05/27/2007.

Thanks Hartti.
Yes, feel free to share that preso on the slideshare.net group since there is lots of good info in it … plus it provides a good perspective on the playing field in terms of runtimes out there.

Good idea Scott, thanks for putting in the effort to set this up, definitely would help save time for developers. One presentation that sprang to mind is Ruben’s BREW presentation on Flash Lite he posted about in the forums:

Thanks Scott! Would there be a way for community members to download the presentations and use them offline? I’m thinking that some people will want to use the presentations offline to promote their professional services to customers. Also, it would be helpful if someone could download a presentation and translate the text into their own language. I dont see a way to download presentations this via slideshare.net though.

John, actually, yes, you can specify if a presentation can be downloaded off the site or not. Basically it just adds a text link to the preso … this optional feature is completely up to the user who uploaded.
