800×480 on a 2.9″ display for mobile devices
December 29th, 2006 by Scott JanousekHitachi Displays, Ltd just started producing 800×480 2.9″ LCD displays for use in mobile devices. Check out the photo below (I think you can guess where it’s going to show up first).
If you thought 240×320 QVGA was nice … the display looks positively gorgeous. Now all they need is a device to install it in (apparently they claim battery drain isn’t all that significant due to enhanced IPS technology).
You can read more about display technology and inner workings here.

(Note: Not actual display size)
Pretty sweet if the display makes it into a Flash Lite enabled device (ummm, cough, NTT DoCoMo).

[...] The display on the device looks beautiful (but not as spectacular as this) … this is definately going to be one of those mobile devices you don’t want to sling around (I smell an AppleCare “plot” for sure) … especially given the inital price tag (competive to a highend smartphone). [...]

I think this is the display that the rumoured iRiver G10 would have used. A google search will show that it should have been 800×480. Of course, since it’s announcement last year, I haven’t actually seen any news of it actually being released. It’s a shame, because since it was rumoured to be running Windows Mobile 5, it would have been able to use FL 2.1. Oh well, maybe the next batch of releases from iRiver will have a new FLED.
