Nokia 5300 supports device video wallpaper and screensaver
November 7th, 2006 by Scott Janousek
While here in Singapore, I managed to pick up a Nokia 5300 … this is not released in the US yet, but it’s all over the place here. It’ been here for a while, and also in parts of Europe.
One of the cool things I found while experimenting with the Flash Lite 2.0 player on this S40 device is that you are able to embed device video in your SWF, and both the wallpaper and screensaver modes will support the playback.
This is might be useful, in that you can have both audio and video content in wallpapers and screensavers.
Screensavers perhaps make the most sense, I’m still coming up with a good use case to have Video as a wallpaper … perhaps a video that plays clips at certain time intervals?
It would have to be something subtle to not detract from the user interface while the content is running inline with the device OS.
Of course filesize would also be something to consider also … I don’t think people would be willing to download a 4 MB wallpaper/screensaver unless it was extremely compelling content.

Hi Scott,
Thats really nice.
So audio does work with the player then? I had heard through Aniway’s blog that it didn’t support audio which seemed really strange. I might have to order one I think.
Cheers

A video chronicaling the passage of time throughout the day would be nice. So, everytime you opened up your phone you would see it matching up to the luminosity of your surroundings. Morning, afternoon, evening and night. It would be pretty nice. Elegant…

Is it too early too know how long the battery life is when the screensaver/wallpaper is that heavy?

Ryan, interesting question.
I do not have the answer. This might be good research to do … figure out a practical method to measure the battery drain of Flash Lite content running …
