Simple Nokia Series 40 screensaver
August 30th, 2006 by Scott JanousekHere’s a simple Nokia Series 40 screensaver I put together a while back to test out sub-LCD capabilities on the 6125 and 6136.
Download the zip (172 KB).
This screensaver can be used for main or mini-display on Nokia Series 40 3rd Edition Devices shipping with Flash Lite 1.1.
You can also use it for wallpaper (I reserved space within the content to accomodate for (most) device UI elements).

Ciao Scott,
cool !!!
I need a series 40 now !!
I wish the Series 60 had all the implementation of FL.

Nice one mate, I’m shamlessly promoting you on my 6131 from now on. I think the S40 implementation with wallpapers and screensavers is really going to be a nig area early on for FL.

Alessandro, personally I would go with the 6136, but I think there a couple newer devices out now (not sure if they are fold/flip style though) …
Dale, ha. Slap some new assets in there and you’ve got a Moket version.
P.S. What does nig mean? Did you mean nice?
All others … don’t think you have to neccessarily have a Series 40 device to design and build screensavers and wallpapers for this platform. The Nokia S40 SDK (publicly available) has an emulator which allows you to easily test Flash Lite content that you develop (although there is no substitute for the real deal).

Hi!
I have a problem which you might help me solve.
I just bought a Nokia 6234. The phone is great, but I hate its tiny clock (it uses like the smallest possible font, you almost need a magnifying glass to read it). I said no problem and created a Flash Lite movie which displays a nice big clock. The problem is that if I use the SWF as a wallpaper or as a screensaver, the movie is paused when the backlight goes off, so the clock also stops. If I open the SWF manually, the movie keeps running, but that’s of no use…
So, is there any way I could make a clock which would run automatically and would not stop? I also tried with J2ME, but J2ME apps can not be used as a wallpaper or a screensaver.
Regards,
Jaka

One more question regarding the above: is this “feature” phone-specific? On my phone, the same thing happens with your screensaver – it stops when the light goes off. Can some of you people tell me if your phone exhibits the same behavior?

Yes, A clock is what I originally set out to build as well … and yes, the 6125 and 6136 also exhibit this.
I scoured the device config, but I saw nothing to get around this …
I’m doubtful, but perhaps there is a way to send an fscommand2 and execute an external app that might take care of this issue? or perhaps there is a custom method to override this behavior (unlikely)?

I just confirmed that the reason for this is to conserve battery life. Obvious, if you’re thinking like an engineer. You don’t want to piss off a customer by depleting their battery life. It would give Flash Lite a bad rap. I was hopeful there was a way around it, but looks like this is just the way the player works for these S40 content types.

Not sure if you guys are right. I’ve got an analogue screen saver for my 6233 and it keeps updating with the backlight off.

just to clarify – thats with power saver and sleep mode both off (but having them on is reputed to only decrease battery consumption by about 7%)

Hi Peter, do you mean Flash Lite content or the built in analog clock?
I just tested on my 6233 with power save off and sleep mode off and the .swf still pauses after the screensaver activates and the timer expires.
Also, I don’t remember seeing “sleep mode” on the other S40 devices mentioned in this post (namely the 6125).

Dear scott,
can i still download the clock you are discussing, i think the link is dead

Hi all – like Jaka says the on screen clock font is hard to read – in fact the font would be fine if it was solid rather than outline on the main face – is a shame that the font cannot be altered/restyled to allow for straining eyes

Is it possible to choose a analog clock (an animated svg file) as a screensaver? Do you know where I could find such file? It does not work with my trials: http://www.fam.tuwien.ac.at/~thomas/test/uhr.svg (and some more in thsi directory).
