Update your iriver u10 PMP from MTP to UMS
August 21st, 2006 by Scott JanousekI don’t think anyone has posted about this, but iriver has actually supplied a firmware update that also allows you to upgrade from MTP to UMS for the u10.
What does this mean?
With the UMS firmware, your u10 will act as an ordinary USB storage device. This means you can use the official iriverplus software to sync media, instead of being restricted to WMP.
You can also use open source PMPLIB (haven’t tried it myself yet though, so no comment just yet).
What does it mean for Flash Lite development? Well, not too much … but, it does mean that you can mount the iriver u10 as a device under OSX (which to my knowledge wasn’t possible while it was MTP). This is good news for the Mac developers looking to develop and test content for the u10 natively, under OSX.
Now the bad news … it looks like the clix doesn’t have such an upgrade (yet). iriver wants to keep the WMP/clix pairing between device and software for the time being.
I know a lot of folks have transitioned from the u10 to the clix, but I still think this is valuable tid-bit for certain individuals to be aware of, since:
- 1.1 content is being created for both the u10 and clix devices.
- There are still a good amount of u10’s floating around and in use.
- A lot of people can’t stand WMP!
