Goodbye DSL … hello Fiberoptic! (Verizon FIOS)

After a few hours of installation at home (a couple snafu’s but nothing major), I now have a Verizon FIOS (Fiberoptic) connection.

So far so good. I’m upgrading from SpeakEasy DSL which has been great for the past couple of years. However, I figured I might as well upgrade since FIOS came to my area and it costs just as much as DSL.

I signed on for the 15 Mbps/2 Mbps plan. This is the middle tier (they also have a plan comparable to DSL). There’s also a top tier plan at $180+/month. That’s insanely fast. Like 30 Mbps/5 Mbps or something silly. That plan is for areas where streaming TV and Verizon PVR service is available.

The speed tests coming back look optimistic. Take a look at the before and after speed estimates:

Before (DSL):

DSL

After (Verizon Fios):

VerizonFIOS Fiber

Hopefully my Voodoo laptop has a 100 Mbps card it (I know my Powerbook does) … otherwise it’s time to upgrade!

It’s going to be great having just one bill again for all the services: Flash Lite 2 enabled phone!, cable, fiber. Just as long as the service quality is there.

Personally, I’ve always had good luck with Verizon, even when I had their DSL service (before Speakeasy). Hopefully this keeps up with the fiber service.

Now to go download some huge a%% files, stream some video, and perhaps even an online game or two to test it all out.

    Dave, no you don’t!

The house next to me costs $1.7 million … and it doesn’t even have a backyard! These MA housing prices are just plain ludicrous … but not as bad as in CA. :)

-tear- I want FOIS so badly. According to the guys on broadbandreports.com there is some legal issue with FOIS here in WA. Enjoy it!

I’m dying to get FIOS installed at home. It’s been available in Irving, TX for a year and a half, but I’ve been looking at moving closer to work in North Dallas since it was available.

So instead, I called Comcast to ask them how to cancel and they brought my cable internet (w/no TV) down from $55.95/mo to $34.95 to match the FIOS offer for a year. That ran out a couple of months ago, so I called again yesterday and they not only took me down to $24.95/mo, but they upped me from 4mbps down to 6mbps down.

I know there’s a Verizon FIOS availability map online, it just needs to be integrated with a Houses for sale/Google Maps application so I can figure out where to move. :)
