iriver e10

Surprise, surprise, surprise. I have a new gadget: the iriver e10.

Many thanks to JC Kim for sending it over from the land of Flash Lite 2 enabled devices: Korea … but not to worry, we’ll (the U.S.) have our own devices soon enough.

This is the second device I know of to be shipped preinstalled with Flash Lite 2 (the first being the newly released iriver clix).

It is reporting back FL 7,1,51,0.

This is the same version running on the clix implementation. However, it remains to be seen if any of the underlying API is at all different.

Besides the fact that the device has a 6 GB of storage (as opposed to 2 GB on the clix), it also differs in the following respects:

Features

â–ª the 4 way d-click rocket UI is substituted for a 4 way directional keypad. Yes, there are 2 soft keys as well.

Overall the layout works well. In fact, I probably like it better in some respects to the clix and u10. This is just a personal preference though. I guess I like pushing buttons. Call me a button pusher (like John Locke or Mr. Ecco on Lost? Sorry, obscure TV reference … ).

â–ª The 1.5-inch TFT supports a resolution of 128 x 128.

This outta make Flash Lite content development a challenge. This is smaller than most s60 implementations (176 x 208), perhaps closer to some i-mode content types. Any smaller than this and what’s the point!? :)

â–ª the Btamin service (see below)

Interesting. Must be a “cultural” fad. I haven’t gotten into it yet. Maybe I’ll mess with it more when I’m stressed.

â–ª the built-in TV remote functionality

Yes, you can use the e10 as a remote. No, it doesn’t do auto discovery, but so far it’s picked up on my Sony and JVC units from the preprogrammed codes table it has. I’ve had no problem with the basic remote functionality (volume, changing channels, etc).

If you are interested, check out all the specs for the e10.

Here’s my take on some of the features and services that stand out when compared to the u10 or clix.

Btamin
At first glance, this seems interesting. Think of Flash Lite mood enhancer applications. Supposedly, this service messes with your brain waves. On the device these appear to just be .swf’s that contain sequences of images accompanied by mood altering audio tracks. Speaking of which the device supports 128K MP3’s at 44 khz. The sound is great here. Here is an example:

btamin_example

But overall, I don’t get it. I suppose you could use it to fall asleep (a dream machine type device) … that is, if the e10 had an internal speaker (which it sadly doesn’t). Personally, if I need to mood enhancer I eat a bannana to get happy (don’t believe me? Ask a chimp!), or have a glass of milk to go to bed. This is just my first impressions of btamin. I’ll have to give it another go when I need some time to decompress. More exploration and trial is needed here.

Profile
Does it beat the nano footprint? Well, personally I like it just for the fact that it’s more sturdy than a flimsy nano. But the profile is nowhere near the slim figure of the ipod. It’s my personal preference, but I like to be able to take my devices around and not have to worry about scratching or cracking the display, etc. The e10 fits my needs to a T. My only complaint is the small display. At 128×128, there’s not quite a lot of screen real estate to work with, but it gets the job done. It’s just not as luxorious as the clix or u10, or viliv p1.

UI
If you’ve seen the new Clix UI, then imagine a scaled down version for the e10 with some minor changes. Yes, it’s also a FLUI. I wonder how long it took to port the UI from the clix to this device (or vice-versa?) … I bet it was a lot easier and quicker than if the UI had been done using convention methods!

Video
It does MP4 video. The WOW (World of Warcraft) video that comes preinstalled is pretty amazing for such a small device. I don’t plan on watching any feature films on it, but for TV shows, and other small clips this would be perfect for someone on the move. True, it’s nowhere close to the video capabilities on the viliv p1, or other such PMPs. But it’s still better than nothing. And if you’re wondering if it does pictures as the u10 and clix does, yes (text files too).

Audio
Yep, it supports MP3, WMA, OGG, and ASF. It also has the standard iriver FM Tuner, and Voice Recorder.

TV Remote
It supports the basic functionality, including on/off, volume control, and channel changing. Unforunately, it looks like it’s only channel up or down. I didn’t see any kind of “remote interface” done in Flash so this could be added through a FLUI. It might be possible, but perhaps not, since it appears as though you must lock the device in order to put it into “TV remote” mode. This effectively disables the display and any navigation within the Flash UI.

Flash Lite
I already mentioned it’s Flash Lite 2. Of course, it also supports Flash Lite Games. Just ones that work in a small space! :) It gets interesting with the Btamin Flash content, as well as customized Flash Lite “theme functionality” it provides. Basically, it comes with a few preinstalled themes, but you can build your own which is quite cool. Here are the one’s preinstalled:

e10 themes

More on this later.

Summary
The e10 has yet to hit the shelves in parts outside of the Asian Pacific region. Look for the e10 in upcoming months … just be aware it might not be called the “e10″. I almost guarantee they’ll change the name when it ships outside to the rest of the world.

Overall, I like the e10. You might too if you’re into a more durable PMP in the 6 GB storage range.

Stay tuned to the blog as I begin to experiment with Flash Lite content on this device.

  1. Adrian Ivanescu Says:

Just got the e10 for AU$295 from JB Hifi. Prick would not bargain with me, but compared to other players its a good price.

    Some issues:
Uses same software as other iriver stuff. Can’t say the Iriver Plus 2 software is that fantastic at communicating with the e10. Even after synchronising playlists for songs on the device it still leaves bits of old songs on the player. When you accidently play an empty list not surprisingly it skips over the songs like Winamp until it finds an actual song to play. I usually put an album on repeat, and on several occasions I accidently chose an empty list which made the E10 go into an infinite loop I could only get out of by pressing the little reset hole on the side. Small bug, but a nuisance because you can’t actually delete songs or albums off the player itself. Need to do it via computer.
As for the video component, I don’t know where in the iRiver software does it let you convert vids. The E10 supposedly plays MPEG4 SP, but its all lies. The only codec I could get working was DivX 6.1 to 6.25. Used VirtualDub to manually set the required 128kbps audio, 15fps 128 x 128 video. Not the most straightforward method. However I must say that after getting the default World of Warcraft video off teh player and running it through a deblocking filter in divX 6.25, the outcome was much smoother, and the file size dropped from 8Mb to about 6.5

    The good:
I’m being too negative here. the remote is fantastic in stores for messing with televisions on display for sale and creating general havoc. :)
Another fantastic thing abotu the E10 for some of us with more sensitive ears is that unlike other players with cheaper DACs, lowering the volume down to 1 does not mean one of your earbuds goes silent, ie - audio on teh E10 is very well balanced. The stock earbuds that come with it have very good flat responce unlike another pair of “quality” Sony buds that reproduce bass real well and nothing else. Still, nothing beats open ear headphones.
Checked around and found out the 1″ 6Gb 3,600 Hitachi HDD in this is the best you can get for shock resistance and speed for its size (about 8mb/sec). Hitachi also make an 8Gb version of a gazillion dollars more.

    Future wants:
Wifi !! Yes, don’t look at me like that. Friend came back from Japan with a digi camera that had WiFi in it. 54Mbps (~6Mb/sec) which would fit the microdrive to a tea. Imagine transferring stuff without a USB. Yes, I know you use USB to charge the batteries, but I want the option.

PS - Was considering getting the E10 in black but decided on the white because it looks good with the black border round the screen

  2. Scott Janousek Says:

You can download iriver plus 3 from http://www.iriver.co.kr. Why not upgrade the firmware while you’re at it? It might solve some of the issues you are talking about.

  3. Will Says:

Scott thanks for the tip re iRiver plus 3 - is there a mirroe site in English or do one of the korean tabs point to an english version?

  4. Scott Janousek Says:

The software already supports English … however, downloading it was problematic. Last time I checked since you have to login. You need to know at least some Korean!

  5. Scott Janousek Says:

Will, if you send me your contact info I can post it for you to download.

  6. david Says:

I also need an english version download of the iriver plus 3, Scott can u send it to me @: ehojoon@gmail.com

  7. Robert Says:

Hey, i really need the iriver plus 3 aswell so if you could tell me where i can find a link that would be great. i’m not that good at korean :(

  8. Robert Says:

    forgot the mail: bunnyhopp@flashmail.com

  9. james Says:

im clueless with the account stuff on the korean site
    my email is whitingbait@hotmail.com
    thnx :)

  10. Nic Says:

Can anyone tell me if the iRiver plus software is in any way compatible with iTunes. I am assuming it’s a no, but I thought I would ask.
I have just purchased the e10 and would love to know if I can use the 4G of songs I have already copied into iTunes.

    Cheers,

    Nic

  11. Scott Janousek Says:

Hi everyone, I got a lot of requests for iriver plus 3, so I posted it below. I take no responsibility for upgrades or problems.

    * Please DO NOT repost this direct link, but instead direct people to this blog posting. *

    http://www.scottjanousek.com/downloads/iPlus3_Setup_full.exe

Really, you should be downloading it directly from http://www.iriver.co.kr/ , but I’ll leave it up until a new version is out, or people start to abuse the download by reposting the link in a really public place!

  12. Muscovy Says:

Thanks Scott for helping out. I bought the iriver 10 a week ago and have been searching everwhere to find a suitable program to allow music video transfers. When i read your site comments and downloaded iriver plus 3, the damn thing now works beautifully.

    Thanks mate..

    Muscovy..

  13. Mutt Says:

I am having troubles putting videos on my e10 does iriver plus 3 help?

  14. Al Says:

I bought an E10 a few days ago from JB and its great. I downloaded iriver Plus 3 and found it really easy to load video and audio. I am even using Plus 3 as my main music player now as it doesn’t hog system resources like iTunes and WMP.

The sound quality on the E10 is really nice, and the unit seems plenty durable. Navigation is great and the screen is bright. 6GB for this size and with all these functions blows anything else out of the water. Good quality radio, record from radio and voice recorder, even a few games if you are sitting around board somewhere.

As I mentioned I haven’t had it that long, but I wouldn’t hesitate recommending it at this stage.

    Cheers

    Al

  15. Luthien Says:

    Hi there

I’ve bought the e10 a month or so ago here in Korea and I would love to have the iriver plus 3, but the file on your blog does download it just does not want to work. I cannot read or understand Korean, but if you could either send me the file or tell me how to get it on the website, it would be much appreciated.

    thanks

    me

  16. chris Says:

how do you put videos on the e10?

  17. Jeff Says:

Copy the video to the e10’s ‘videos’ directory using windows explorer. If you’re having trouble with compatibility, use a program called ‘iriverter’ to convert your video to the format required by the e10. The program doesn’t support the e10. What you need to do is to open the u10 profile found in the ‘iriverter’ installation directory and change the res from 320×240 to 128×128. That’s it. The program works beautifully - I’ve already converted all of Happy Tree Friends Volume 1, which is ideal for the small e10 screen.

  18. Luke Says:

I would like to know if the e10 can change its background because I don’t really like the circles

  19. sammy Says:

yes you can, i downloaded some really cool backroands off the korean site. or you can just put ur own photos on there.

    from sammy

  20. sammy Says:

how do u put videos on using iriver plus 3????

  21. Andrew Says:

How long does this nice unit take to recharge?

    freddyamay@hotmail.com

  22. Luke Says:

How do you change the screen size in iriverter

  23. Alice Says:

well…i just got a iriver e10 but i’m having trouble putting videos on it. I got the iriverter but it doesnt seem to put the videos on the iriver, it just says error on the screen. Wat do i do to make it work

  24. Evan Says:

Scott - cheers man - I’ve been trying to a) work out a process of converting video that will work, b) sort out something / anything better than iriver plus 2 for file management. The e10 is a great bit of hardware that is just badly let down by the software and supporting documentation.

  25. Daniel Says:

I have been having a very hard time with “Iriveter” I’m Downloading iriver plus 3 so hopefully this will work. I will get back to you If I am successful

  26. Daniel Says:

I still need a converter now I’ve tried Iriverter but for some reason it will not work I’ve reinstalled several times and it comes up with the same error message even though I’ve done a clean wipe. Is there another Converter out there? If so please link me.

    Thanks

  27. Vinvij Says:

Please help me 4 i cant put up any videos in my Iriver E10…
Tell me what am i to do 4 its useless taking the palyer with me with no videos in it…Please reply soon…Could u tell me any software where i can convert my videos to the 1 compatible with the E10

  28. Fredrik Says:

I got my E10 last week. I chose it only because critics have said that it has the best sound around. So I hooked it up with my Sennheiser HD 25-1, and I have never been happier. I can’t find any place to plug my headphones that gives me better sound that the E10 does.

I love the simplicity of the GUI, it’s really simple to navigate. The iRiver plus 3 is a great tool to load the player with stuff.

The negative things is that i beleive that the GUI is too cute, girlish even. I can’t seem to find any themes that will better this. I am actually abit shy showing it off because of this. I can’t find tools to build my own theme either. The most negative thing is that i dont know any Korean so most sites is not available for me.

I’ll keep you posted if I find out anything usefull.

  29. Scott Janousek Says:

Fredrik, http://www.iriver.co.kr has a bunch of e10 themes that are not “girly”, you have to do a bit of diving into the forums, but there are some Flash Lite themes which are pretty cool … it’s also very easy to create your own!

  30. Kaul Says:

God, its easy to put videos on your E10. Install Iriver plus 3 and put them on just like you put music on.
This is the best Music/Video player IMHO, the only let down is the thickness and lack of 3rd party support. I don’t think the themes are girly, just the background images. It’s easy to fix, just go to settings and in display there should something in there to change your background.

    >Nice blog Scott. I only have one question, where can I get Btamin .swf files? Is there a zip file full of them that i can download and put the Btamin folder (I have 1.4 Korean Firmware). Thanks

  31. james Says:

How do you create your own theme is there a program i can use

  32. angus Says:

  40. Scott Janousek Says:

  41. justin Says:

  43. justin Says:

I went to jb n they gave me a service number to ring wen i told the guy the problem he just told me to send it in to this place to ge fixed, seems like this is a pretty common problem that can only be fixed by the iriver repairers. i 2 posted on iriver forums looking for anyone who had fixed it, this post i found was very old. email me at preppylittlesavage@hotmail.com
if you have fixed the problem urself as i have not sent it in to be fixed yet… also email me n i’ll give u my username at misticriver.

  44. justin Says:

  46. Dan Says:

    Hi guys,

Have just started trying to load my e10 up and now it has files every where that I don’t want :( I go to the ‘Settings/ Advanced/ Reset All Settings” area of the e10. It then says “Click OK to Confirm”, I have tried clicking the button but nothing works?? Tried pressing all the buttons and when I go back in to the e10 all my files are still there. I just want to get it back to Factory fresh settings, does any one know exactly how to do this?

Oh and is there a way to delete some of the menus like artist, songs and that stuff?

Thanks for any help in advance

  47. Fahrenheit Says:

Solution for “Update Required” - problem is actually quite simple…

Install Iriver plus 3 on a computer with a different hardware and software configuration. Do not use Windows Vista machines, it will fu*k things up. Run update from that comp and you are back in business.

Worked like a charm for me several times. Seems Iriver does not like my laptop.

  48. Vandana Says:

  58. marcus the gangster from cairns Says:

hey mishele whats da iriverter? n what does it do?

  59. Raven Says:

    Q. the problem i was wondering if you could help me with was why is it when ever i open the iriver plus 3 program it closes 15-30 seconds later?

Background Info: i have had my E10 for about 2/3 of a year now (bought in Australia)
when i first bought it the iriver plus version was 2, i delayed updating it any further because i herd the updated versions were harder to use and had a lot of bugs
but now iriver plus 3 is out and i thought well i’ll just give it a go
the program keeps closing and i find it very annoying, yes i do find it a lot easier to use but the fact of the closing matter may convert me back to using plus 2 >

  60. Mishele Says:

iriverter is this software for changin videos to play in iriver……but it doesnt work for e10….ive heard u can change the profile..and make the size 128X128…but i dunno how to chnge its profile!!

  61. georgia Says:

    hi
ive had my iriver for a while but can not seem to put videos on it, its driving me insane
i got badak but have no idea what to change the settings to
i also dont know how to put more flash games onto it
    please help

  62. marcus the gangster from cairns Says:

hey i tryed ireverter and you cant change the profile its gay! but it worked with iriver plus 3
    !!!!!!!
    yay
ive got 3 movies on my iriver

  63. georgia Says:

yea i had iriver plus 3 as well and it was working fantastic. but one day it broke down and i cant seem to download it again, everytime i do the ‘video’ section isnt with it… it’s crazy

  64. Raven Says:

iriverter wont let me change the frame dimension, anyone know how?
badak is just really annoying and doesnt seem to work at all for me, i changed the resolution/pixel/frame dimension but even after i convert it to mp4 and load it onto my iriver it still doesnt work
but i’ve recently found something called VirtualDub/VirtualDubMo works better i reckon, i havent tried but with the messing around i’ve been doing i reckon its the best one to go for so far
i still cant get plus 3 to work, its a pain in the arse since after upgrading my firmware none of my songs play in the main menu and i have to go into the saved files (USB part) of my e10
its more like plus 3 is always crashing on me or something
does resetting the whole thing delete the saved files (that i drag and dropped in the folders) as well?
