iriver clix

I just received the clix today. I whipped up a quick $version test, and it’s coming back FL 7,1,51,0.

So, yes, looks like Flash Lite 2 (in some form or another) is preinstalled.

The UI lag everyone was complaining about on the u10 (FL 1.1) is pretty much non-existent with the clix. You can tell the speed difference immediately upon using it.

Seriously, it’s quick … on the level of an ipod now. Honestly, I’m not sure if they changed the CPU inside or not, but it’s pretty clear, that Flash Lite 2 is playing a large part in the speed factor.

They’ve also overhauled the UI a tiny bit. If it wasn’t intuitive for the average user to navigate before, it sure must be now. I’d even go so far as to say it’s easier to use than an ipod clickwheel (and just as responsive)!

New stuff I noticed off the bat … there’s a “file browser” on board the device, and an extra Flash Game (very simliar to Luciano’s chicken crossing game, Corn Rush, aka “frogger”).

I’m glad it’s got 2 GB. That extra bit of space makes it all the much better.

It’s shipping with WMP 11 and ties in with Urge, but not much else on the software front. Still uses standard MTP (US version), and ends up as a USB drive.

Finally, at first glance it’s appears they’ve protected the system files a little better, so no more hacking (although I’m sure Justin and others will try) … looks like only the content files are accessible … surely there is a way … it just won’t be as easy on the u10. More investigation is needed.

Performance? I’ll post the benchmarks when I get a chance …

I’m also curious about the MMI on it. As many know, the u10 has many custom commands to tie to the device … wondering if there is new functionality … unfortunately, there is no public CDK for it yet … or if it does exist (in some form), it’s probably in Korean.

Interested in getting one? Read the reviews off of PC Mag and CNET. Check out the official iriverclix site as well.

And if you’re wondering if I still use the ipod … Nope.

Sa’yo’nara ipod? Not quite yet … but if companies are incorporating itunes like software, I fail to see how Apple can continue to hold on to market share (Good thing they make other kick ass products).

I guess that’s one potential reason why Apple is moving to get a version of itunes out on Japanese phones … could be some money there …

Will we ever see an Apple exlusive phone (hybrid)? Hmmm, probably not. Leave that to the device manfacturers, I say. They already know what people like (and will use)!

No need to reinvent the wheel (unless it’s a much much better one) … but if anyone can come up with a better wheel, it’s Apple!

    Definitely cool.

I’ll give some MP4 video a try later and see if it’s supported on the device! :)

Since it’s a custom implementation, I’m sure there will be some additional functionality, and some lacking there of … but a CDK would help a lot.

Hopefully either Adobe, iriver, or a 3rd party is looking to combine the u10, e10, and now clix info into one “iriver” spec. It is needed.

Also, if I were smashing content, I’d be creating some desktop software and/or service to distribute/aggregate Flash Lite content (think itunes for flash lite content) … this would be the smart thing to do, as preinstalled content is only going to get you so far …

Apparently Microsoft worked closely with iRiver to make improvements on the U10 design for CLIX. It will be interesting to see how the U10/wmp11/Urge combination compete with ipod/itunes.

    Yes, MTV is also involved.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see some ads when the e10 comes out.

  6. Luciano Ayres » Flash Lite Friday #9 Says:

[...] In the previous issue of Flash Lite Friday, brought by Bryan, Hayden suspected that the new iRiver Clix was Flash Lite 2 enabled. Well, Scott tested the device and confirmed the FL 2.0 support, but Mr. Janousek also pointed out that the next Mobile Monday Boston meeting, scheduled for 06/05/2006, will focus on mobile entertainment… Cool, right? It would be if there was a Flash Lite topic included. Do they need glasses? [...]

    2 questions:
    - any idea about the aprox. charging cycles that the battery can support?
    - is this device full Flash Lite 2.0 compatible ? can I develop my own calendar, memo, phonebook using flash lite 2.0 and its XML data saving capabilities….

    Thanks.

Battery charge time on mine is about 2.5 hours from a full dead battery. Approx battery time is about 30 hours play time.

Playing back a full movie on it with the screen on full brightness and you are probably going to cut the play time down to 6 hours.
