05/09/2006 - “Mobile Flash” is no longer listed as a feature under entertainment. I would guess Adobe’s appeal finally got to Helio …

IMPORTANT UPDATE: This is not 100% confirmed. I’ve called twice and both tech reps were NOT 100% sure if it had Flash on it. Some were saying it was another kind of flash. I’ve gotten 2 different stories from 2 different tech support people.

I did activate the phone and it is very locked down. There is no way just to check whether it has the Lite player. There is no way to get into OS level specifics, not even really a file explorer.

However, after browsing the content, I can see several areas where it might be Flash. So it *might* have the player. Nothing ending with a .swf to reveal the mystery … yet.

I have a request in to Helio to clearify once and for all. It’s probably someone that speaks Korean that knows the answer … From what I remember … I do believe Pantech does do Flash Lite UI’s … so who knows. Anyway… an important update.

Marco just posted about the Helio launch today. Helio is an MVNO that we’ve (Flash Lite community) all been posting about.

I think we can consider this confirmed, as if you look at the specs page on the Kickflip and Hero phone models it lists Mobile Flash. For all intensive purposes this most probably means Flash Lite.

… “Entertainment - Personal Entertainment Center supports: MP3, MPEG 4/H.264 player, QVGA video, VOD, MMS, Mobile Flash

IMPORTANT UPDATE 05/05/2006 - apparently now they are telling me that “Mobile Flash” means the ability to download images in the browser. What confusing terminology if that is the case!

Is that official enough? I’m sure we’ll hear from Adobe on this one.

How is the mobile flash player ever going to catch on when you have to pay $ 10 voor it in the adobe store? Is there ever going to be a windows-mobile version?

The phones look pretty slick, btw.

  2. Scott Janousek Says:

Flash Lite is already coming preinstalled on phones … however the end goal is to have to come down off the air. All this for free of course. This is already starting to happen globally (previously this was true only of certain regions like APAC).

The $10 charge is only in place now to prevent the proliferation of the Player outside of normal channels (MVNO’s, operators, carriers, device manufacturers).

If you think about it, this makes sense in the mobile world. You don’t want to ask people to install software. It should already be there.

  3. Scott Janousek Says:

… so with MVNO’s like Helio it should be preinstalled.

Ok, it makes sense… sort of. Still, I’ll be stuck to my windows smartphone for the coming 2 years, and as a flash developer I’d also like to dive into the flash-mobile world… I guess it’s PSP for me for now :-)

[...] Today was the official launch of Helio MVNO. As Marco and Scott pointed out this virtual carrier has two phones which have Mobile Flash. This is an important news since it is the first carrier to provide Flash Lite enabled phones in the US. So now developer are able to sell Flash Lite content and have real consumers to look at.
