Microsoft.com - free domain name and website

Microsoft.com - free domain name and website
“This looks like an incredible deal for someone looking for a basic homepage with a personal domain name. Through Microsoft Office Live Beta, you can sign up for free today, allowing you to register and own a domain name for free (any available .com, .net, or .org domain name), and they provide basic design tools to help you build your own website. It comes with 30MB of storage space on your website, and a few email accounts. The free service has a limit of 10GB of monthly bandwidth, which is plenty for any personal website. This is definitely not meant for an online commercial business unless you sign up for the extra services, but for a personal website, a fan website, a blog site, or a company presence website, this is a hot deal.
Update: Even if you choose the service that is free both before and after the beta, they still ask for a credit card. That is to confirm you are who you say you are, and to limit the amount of illegal websites on their service. If they did not require a credit card verification, their free service would quickly clog with scam, spam, and illegal websites.”

I sent email few weeks back for sign-up and even I’m not U.S Resident I got “key” few days later. So they did asked my Credit card so I didn’t sign-up ( I don’t “understand” why they need a credit card for something Free* )

That’s an easy one. They need a credit card # to make sure certain entities don’t abusive the system. They don’t use it for billing neccessarily, only as a means to authenticate you.

I would never give my credit card number to Microsoft just for a free website because this could be a scam because I hear a lot of free stuff that now requires a CC # and lots of people get ID Theft, get money stolen, and their credit ruined because they probably thought it would stop criminals/pirates from taking advantage.
Theres got to be a catch and “Theres no such thing as a free lunch”.
This is unreasonable to ask for sensitive information, espiscally if they can take advantage of your credit cards.
Theres too many scams out there and I don’t want Microsoft to take loads of money unauthorized because I want a free website/Domain Name.
Also if I give out my number and Microsoft doesn’t like me they could Ruin My Credit.
No Thanks Scam Micro$oft!

You might be right. Always be careful even if it appears legit.
