Seminar at Northeastern University: Flash and Mobile Technologies
October 27th, 2005 by Scott JanousekI had a chance to sit in on the recent Seminar at Northeastern University: Flash and Mobile Technologies put on by the Flash Mobile User Group … James Talbot headed up the Macromedia piece, and then was followed by VoiceSignal and Mobot … not sure if it was recorded or not, but you can check the flashmobilegroup site later on and see if it is posted.
I think I had seen James’ presentation somewhere previously, so not much to say there … though he did show off a U10 I believe (it was dark in the preso). One thing I don’t think was mentioned was FLIP. This was mentioned at one of the MAX keynotes, but seems like it’s all hush hush right now … probably hear more about it, given the success of the Kodak camera, and the expected success of the U10.
I was pretty impressed by the mobot pattern recognition software, which by sending a standard mobile photo only (no barcode, or shortcode) to a defined email, you were sms’ed back a promotion, message, or whatever … I did try the demo, and if the technology is as good as they say it is, then we should see more of it … probably overseas first (Japan), then here in the States … I didn’t quite hear the answer to how big their photo recognition DB is, but they have clients … mostly print from what I heard (posters, ads, etc). Reminds me of cuecat in that respect, but no barcode … probably best suited for marketing materials.
The voice signal preso was very good as well. I don’t use much recognition on my phone, but that’s probably because I’m an tactile type guy when it comes to UI (I like to click things).
After listening to the presentation, it will be interesting to see how this proflierates and further defines the user experience on cells … I use voice rec all the time for personal Banking & some Customer Support (don’t we all :)), but never on a mobile for things outside of those 2 items … anyways, let’s just say integrating their technology and Macromedia mobile might would be interesting at some point in the roadmap.
