Ok, so the Flash Player 8 was released some time ago … the obvious question is penetration rate … well, this free communitymx article - Pushing Flash 8 by Robert has some insight …

It’s been so long, I had forgotten that FP7 had the check update feature (enabled by default for 30 day checkups).

If all goes as planned, we should see a higher penetration rate … why?

Most people think of updates in terms of Windows updates … meaning most mom & pop types are likely to download because they think it probably fixes some security hole.

Bonus, the installation process is a snap (the footprint is still small) …

Also, I’m not quite sure who the big guys (yahoo??) are (if any) that are doing express installs … probably not yet, but I can imagine that yahoo with their flash video services will likely be looking at that feature soon to take advantage of the new codec.

When all is said and done, we’ll probably see more production flash 8 than experimental flash 8 sooner rather than later.

Well, the question is …will the fact that you need admin privileges (at least in windows) for flash8 installation have an impact on that optimistic thought…
Does the auto update function work, even if you dont have admin priviliges with the next boot? Does anybody know?

I was just thinking that yesterday.

I guess for most home users they probably have user assigned admin rights … but rollout in corps, schools, etc might be slower where user accounts are managed, locked down, etc.
