A trivial flash lite app built in less an hour … HSAS (Homeland Security Advisory System)
July 27th, 2005 by Scott JanousekI created a very trivial flash lite app in a less than a hour as an exercise for someone interested in the potential of FL … how fast something can be built in Flash Lite? The response I got from the interested party, very fast.
It’s called HSAS (Homeland Security Advisory System). It pulls the US terror alert feed and then displays the alert level on your mobile.
I’m not going to debate the usefulness/uselessness of an alert system (we should all be watchful & alert in these times) … but it works as a very simple dynamic data FL example.
… again it was just to show someone how fast something could be built using Flash Lite … I was suprised to find that there is an actual feed for the alert level. Go figure.
Anyways, I’m sharing the .fla for anyone to download and look at, and learn from, mess with.

You can find a .php or perl script to pull from the alert level or just roll your own and point here for the feed: here.

I think that’s a great example of what’s possible in a short timeframe.

The alert system is about as useless as volume setting 11 on a guitar amp … but flash lite is cool.

I have downloaded the fla but when i try to open it i get this error. Unexpected file format. I think this is a great example how just how great flash lite is.

actually, that’s the flash IDE telling you that it can’t load the .fla, nothing to do with flash lite … it’s probably either you’re attempting to load the .fla on a Mac (sometimes I’ve had this happen), you’re not using flash mx 2004, or possibly the file didn’t download properly. It could be a 3rd possibility, but an NDA prevents me from telling what it could be … if anyone else can open it, post here and let me know. thanks.

If you were getting an “unexpected file type” error … I reposted the .fla since it was saved in a newer format (you guess which format).
It should now open in Flash MX 2004.
