Flash MX 2004 Library panel … managing your assets, color coding folders & layers?
May 7th, 2005 by Scott JanousekAt the keynote at FITC 2005, there was some talk about library panel improvements in the next release of FMX.
One improvement slated (more like a fix) was the ability to access multiple library panels from a simple dropdown menu within a single core library panel … of course, you’ll still be able to use the old way of doing things (managing multiple lib panels)…
This is a perfect example of streamlining and managing assets more efficiently within the library … something I sometimes spend a lot of time on during development.

Anyways …
One additional feature I would love to see in future revs is color coding of folders in the lib panel (ala Photoshop -see screenshot-) …
This could also cross over for layers as well (color coding the actual layers … I’m not talking about outlines).
Having color coding really allows you to organize assets a lot better and quickly allows you spot areas you want to drill into (red for debug, blue for sounds, etc etc). You get the picture.
I’m sure the flash team has thought of this. Who knows it might already be in there or being worked out? … but maybe not … Photoshop’s got it, OSX’s got it, why not flash? I think it would be useful for designers and developers alike.

I wanted to leave the remainder of this post as:
- a space where people can discuss library features they’d like to see in future versions of Flash.
- a space where people can post their ideal folder structure they use for their flash libraries (see above for what I typically use for projects)
